Doug Underhill was born in Newcastle, N.B. and graduated
from Harkins Senior High School in 1964. He obtained his B.A. (1968) and B.Ed. (1969) from St. Thomas University of Fredericton,
N.B. He is presently English Department Head at Miramichi Valley High School in Newcastle.
He has edited a student poetry column for the Miramichi
Weekend, and has given readings at numerous elementary, junior, and senior high schools of N.B. as well as at meetings of
the WFNB, NBTA Subject Council Workshops, and adult university courses. He has been published in The Cormorant, Pottersfield
Portfolio, and the New Brunswick anthology Stubborn Strength. He has read his poetry on CBC Radio and participated in a CBC
Radio Poetry Sweatshop.
Underhill has also published a collection of his
own poetry titled The Lazy Time Of Day (1971). With Bob Gillis, he has produced three videos titled The Legend of The Dungarvon
Whooper (1982), The Great Miramichi Fire of 1825 (1983) and The French Fort Cove and The Headless Nun (1986).
He is a founding member of the Writers Federation
of N.B. and has served that organization as a director for many years. He has represented N.B. on the Atlantic Canada National
Book Festival Week Committee and is a free lance journalist whose work has appeared in The Times-Transcript, The Telegraph
Journal, The Gleaner, and Miramichi Headwaters. He is a regular contributor to The Miramichi Leader and Miramichi Weekend
and a regular columnist for The Maritime Sportsman.
His childrens work include The Popcorn Cat and The
Pumpkin Moon (1985), The Popcorn Cat and The Pumpkin Moon Make New Friends (1986), and Popcorn and Pumpkin Save Tommys Christmas
(1993)
